The structure of biographical entry and its modules

Each biographical entry contains the following categories of data (modules):

  • heading;
  • personal data;
  • education and academic degrees;
  • offices and functions held at the University of Krakow and outside of it;
  • the work and books, including publications and collection of books;
  • list of used sources;
  • recommended citation format.

There is also additional bibliography in some entries.

The structure  of biographical entry and its modules

Heading

Each entry heading corresponds to a standardised naming in Polish. It contains a distinctive combination of the following data, which allows to identify an individual:

  • first name or names
  • surname / nickname
  • father's name
  • place of origin

Each heading is unique. In case of namesakes (homonymy) headings vary by life dates or by other additional information.

The module consists of the following fields:

  • first name
  • surname
  • father's name
  • place of origin
  • place and date of birth
  • place and date of death
  • time range

Time range corresponds, respectively, to the first and the last event that occurs in source materials. It has been automatically generated by software, therefore could not be equal to the exact lifetime of an individual.
Default display option uses standardised superordinate names in Polish. Click on button in the upper right corner to view original names employed in the sources as well as the number of their actual occurrences. When displaying original names, a field „Social origin” also appears. It is dedicated to collecting related source terms.

Personal data

Education and academic degrees

The module collects data concerning all stages of pre-university education and academic degrees received at the University of Krakow or at another institution.
It consists of the following columns:

  • event type
  • education stage/academic degree
  • scientific discipline
  • institution
  • date

Default display option uses standardised superordinate names in Polish. Click on button in the left of module heading to view the relevant sources of data. Some information is supplied with notes giving explanation or comment. Move the cursor over the speech bubble icon to view the comment (mainly in Polish). When information seems to be incorrect, a particular red speech bubble icon with an exclamation mark is used.

Education and  academic degrees

Functions/offices/roles

The module collects data concerning various events in a person’s lifetime, in particular offices and functions held at the University of Krakow as well as occupations in other schools, ecclesiastical institutions, state and local government administration bodies.
It consists of the following columns:

  • event type
  • function/office/role
  • place/institution
  • date

Default display option uses standardised superordinate names in Polish. Click on button in the left of module heading to view the relevant sources of data. Some information is supplied with notes giving explanation or comment. Move the cursor over the speech bubble icon to view the comment (mainly in Polish). When information seems to be incorrect, a particular red speech bubble icon with an exclamation mark is used.

The works and books

The module contains data concerning the works of a person, one’s activity as an author, editor, publisher, translator, copyist or glossator; data concerning private book collection are gathered here as well. The module consists of the following columns:

  • event type
  • title
  • shelf mark
  • date
  • source of data (in abbreviated form)

Click on the magnifier icon in the left side to view the relevant source of data.

Data concerning the literary activity taken from the papers of Żegota Pauli and from so called “Teki” by Leszek Hajdukiewicz are cited collectively. It means that the titles of publications are not specified (it applies mainly to the old prints).

Table sorting

Click on the arrow up / down icon by a column heading to sort the table alphabetically, chronologically (the column “Date”) or numerically (by the number of event notes). The sorting direction could be ascending or descending. Press “Shift” key before clicking the icon to sort more than one column. Sorting with “Shift” key is order-sensitive.

Additional bibliography
Recommended citation format

„List of sources” is a collection of sources, references and materials used to create the biographical entry. It contains the following elements:

  • abbreviation used in CAC database
  • bibliographical reference
  • name of the holder (in case of manuscripts)

Some biographical entries are accompanied with an additional bibliography. It shows bibliographical references collected by Leszek Hajdukiewicz in his so called „Teki”, which have NOT been used to create the entry.

When referring to the CAC database in scientific publications, we recommend to use the suggested citation format with a unique permalink.
